Homaj Secondary School Students Participate in National Geographic–Supported Young Rangers Programme Ondo, Nigeria Students of Homaj Secondary School, Ondo, were among participants in the Young Rangers Programme, a National Geographic Society–supported environmental education initiative implemented by The Green Institute under the leadership of Dr. Adenike A. Akinsemolu. The three-day programme, held from 23 to 25 March 2026, brought together students from various schools across Nigeria, creating a rich, collaborative learning environment focused on the biodiversity of the Nigeria-Cameroon Highlands—one of Africa’s most important ecological regions. Experiential Learning Beyond the Classroom The programme exposed students to a unique blend of expert-led sessions, interactive workshops, and outdoor field experiences. Participants explored key environmental topics including biodiversity, climate change, and conservation, while engaging directly with scientists, educators, and environmental advocates. Through birdwatching exercises, group discussions, and ecosystem studies, students gained practical skills in observation, critical thinking, and environmental interpretation—transforming theoretical knowledge into lived experience. A Voice from Homaj Reflecting on her experience, a Homaj Secondary School student, Owoyemi Oluwadamilola, shared: “I learned that the Nigeria-Cameroon Highlands have many plants and animals that we must protect. Before, I did not think deeply about the environment, but now I understand why it is important and I want to help.” Her reflection captures the essence of the programme’s impact—moving students from awareness to responsibility. Learning in Nature A major highlight for the Homaj students was the field visit to Nibanola Resort, where they participated in birdwatching and highland ecosystem exploration. They observed species such as weaver birds, hawks, and ducks, gaining firsthand insight into biodiversity and habitat relationships. The outdoor activities also promoted teamwork, discipline, and resilience, reinforcing both environmental and personal development. Shaping Future Leaders Speaking on the significance of the programme, Dr. Adenike A. Akinsemolu, National Geographic Educator and Director of The Green Institute, noted that engaging young people early is essential to long-term environmental sustainability. The Young Rangers Programme not only enhanced students’ ecological understanding but also positioned them as emerging environmental stewards capable of influencing their communities. A National Platform for Youth Engagement By bringing together students from different schools across Nigeria, the programme fostered collaboration, shared learning, and a collective sense of responsibility toward environmental protection. For Homaj Secondary School, participation in this initiative represents a strong commitment to experiential education and sustainability leadership—preparing students to play active roles in addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria and beyond.
